The Nigerian government is launching a new system called the Audience Measurement System (AMS) to improve how broadcasters understand their viewers. This system will be introduced in 60,000 homes across Nigeria, starting in Lagos, and aims to provide accurate data on who is watching what on television. The Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, explained that this initiative will help broadcasters, advertisers, and content creators make better decisions by knowing their audience's preferences. It will also support Nigeria's shift from traditional analogue broadcasting to digital broadcasting, which started earlier this year with the Digital Switch Over (DSO) program. The AMS will replace older methods of tracking viewers, like keeping manual diaries, with a modern device called a Peoplemeter. This device will be installed in selected homes and will automatically collect data about what shows people are watching. This information will be sent daily to a central location, giving a clear picture of viewing habits across the country. The project is part of a broader government effort to promote digital transformation and economic growth in Nigeria. Households participating in the AMS will receive a free device and a monthly data incentive for their involvement. Trained technicians will handle the installation of these devices to ensure everything runs smoothly and securely. Overall, the AMS aims to create a more transparent and efficient broadcasting environment in Nigeria, benefiting everyone involved in the media industry.
