At the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union in February 2026, a proposal was made to recognize African youth as the seventh region of the Union. The idea was refined through engagements with African Union actors and the diaspora, and on June 16, over a thousand young Africans in Johannesburg affirmed the call. The proposal was also presented in Bujumbura during the 20th anniversary of the African Youth Charter, where it received a favorable reception. The initiative aims to address generational exclusion, which is seen as contrary to Pan-African principles.
