Nigeria's poultry industry faces a severe crisis due to high production costs and input shortages. Feed accounts for about 70% of production costs, with maize, soybean, electricity, transport, and finance expenses making production unprofitable. Farmers also struggle with shortages of day-old chicks, whose prices have risen from about N1,200 to between N2,200 and N3,000, while eggs now cost N200 to N300 each in some markets. The situation threatens food security, nutrition, jobs, and the wider economy, as the sector supports a poultry population estimated between 180 million and 300 million birds.
