Stakeholders from government, development institutions, the private sector, and civil society have called for a fundamental shift in Nigeria's approach to critical minerals, urging the country to use its resources for green industrialisation. At a high-level convening in Abuja, speakers emphasised the need for domestic processing, beneficiation, manufacturing, and skills development, as well as stronger environmental safeguards. They rejected the extract-and-export model that has historically led to exporting raw materials and importing finished products. The meeting was convened by the National Council for Climate Change (NCCC) and supported by the Africa Policy Research Institute (APRI).
