South Africa: Teaching and Learning won’t be Compromised in Western Cape

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has assured that teaching and learning will continue uninterrupted despite the suspension of the 2026 Foundation Phase National Catalogue. This follows Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube's decision to maintain the suspension while legal implications of the procurement process are considered. Provinces have been advised that the existing catalogue of previously approved materials will remain available for the 2027 school year. The WCED has implemented plans, including expanding the pre-2026 catalogue with decodable graded readers and developing additional reading resources, to ensure schools have access to necessary materials.
