Venezuela’s heavy crude isn’t a great fit for the US emergency reserve. It could still help refill it.

US Energy Secretary Chris Wright has suggested that the US could swap heavy Venezuelan crude for lighter American oil to help refill the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR). Speaking in Caracas, Wright explained that the swap would circumvent the issue that some Venezuelan heavy crude grades are not suitable for the reserve. His comments follow President Donald Trump's announcement that he plans to fill up the strategic reserves with Venezuelan oil. The proposal could also increase competition for Canadian oil in the US market.
