The federal government, through the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), has introduced the National Environmental (Plastic Waste Control) Regulations, 2026. The regulations aim to shift Nigeria from a linear 'make, use and throw away' model to a circular economy that emphasizes recovery, recycling, and resource efficiency. This move comes as Nigeria generates an estimated 2.5 million tonnes of plastic waste annually, much of which contributes to environmental degradation, flooding, and public health issues. Under the new rules, producers, importers, and businesses will bear greater responsibility for the end-of-life management of plastic products.
