The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has disputed the widely quoted figure of 15 million out-of-school children in Nigeria, suggesting the actual number is around 7 million. He disclosed that the government plans to conduct a nationwide, grid-based household survey in collaboration with the National Bureau of Statistics to establish the accurate figure and locations of these children. Alausa also mentioned that polytechnics will now award Bachelor of Technology degrees in engineering and other fields. Additionally, he noted that medical school admissions have increased from 5,000 to 12,000 annually, with a target of 20,000, and that N250 billion has been invested in new student accommodations nationwide.
