The South-South geopolitical zone of Nigeria, despite its significant contributions to the Federation Account through hydrocarbon deposits, has the worst network of federal roads in the country. According to Etim Etim, no major investment has been made in federal road infrastructure in the region for over 25 years, except for the recently completed Bonny-Bodo Road. The last major federal highway construction in the area was the Benin-Asaba expressway during the Obasanjo administration.
