In his newsletter, Makinde rejected the notion that higher fuel prices are necessary to eliminate price differentials that encourage smuggling to neighboring countries. He stressed that the debate should focus on border security rather than making citizens pay more. Makinde also called for a more nuanced discussion on fuel subsidy, moving beyond the binary choice of subsidizing or deregulating petroleum products.
