AAA projects that the upcoming Labor Day weekend will see the highest average gas prices on record, with national averages exceeding $4 per gallon. The national average peaked at $4.56 in May and has since fluctuated, reaching $4.15 on Friday. California currently has the highest average fuel price, approaching $6 per gallon. The elevated prices are attributed to the ongoing conflict between the US and Iran, which began in late February and led to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
