The United States military has intercepted and shot down more than 300 drones operated by drug cartels along the U.S.-Mexico border since the beginning of 2026, according to U.S. Northern Command (USNORTHCOM). The command reported that 100 of these drones were downed in August alone, though it did not specify whether the interceptions occurred on U.S. or Mexican territory. USNORTHCOM attributed the drone activity to transnational criminal organizations involved in drug trafficking and other illegal cross-border operations, including smuggling and surveillance of law enforcement and military personnel. The announcement comes amid heightened security concerns along the border, where authorities have increasingly focused on the use of unmanned aerial vehicles by criminal groups.
