The article recounts the story of Brigadier John Amadu Bangura of Sierra Leone, who was betrayed by Siaka Stevens, the man he helped become Prime Minister. Bangura had handed over power to a democratically elected government in 1968, similar to Nigeria's General Olusegun Obasanjo. After a series of coups, Bangura was posted to the Sierra Leonean embassy in Washington but later disappeared to Guinea to join Stevens. They returned to Freetown in 1968 after a sergeants' coup, and Bangura was eventually executed on Stevens' orders.
