Festus Okoye, a former National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has warned that vote buying and insecurity could significantly influence the outcome of the 2027 general election. Speaking during a virtual masterclass organized by the Lagos chapter of the Society of Nigerian Broadcasters, Okoye noted that vote buying has evolved from discreet cash distributions to more open transactions at polling units. He also expressed concerns about the security situation, stating that the level of personnel and resources deployed during off-cycle elections might not be replicated nationwide. These factors, he said, could pose major challenges to the integrity of the electoral process.
