The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned that politicians and parties using abusive or inflammatory language in campaigns risk heavy penalties under the Electoral Act 2026. The Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Adedayo Oketola, stated that rhetoric becomes punishable intimidation when it incites ethnic or religious hatred or threatens harm. Offenders could face a fine of ₦10 million or a 12-month jail term. INEC also urged the media to call out erring politicians ahead of the 2027 general election.
