The Ophthalmological Society of Nigeria (OSN) has warned that Nigeria may lose more eye specialists due to ongoing emigration, worsening the shortage of eye-care professionals. The society estimates that the migration of a single ophthalmologist could cost the economy approximately $150,000 annually. Dr Gloria Patrick-Ferife, OSN President, raised this concern in a communiqué issued after the society's 51st Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference in Abuja. The conference, themed 'Re-imagining Eye Care in the Digital Era,' addressed challenges in eye-care delivery and the potential of technology to improve access. Patrick-Ferife called on all levels of government to increase employment of ophthalmologists to mitigate the impact on rural and underserved communities.
