Auditor-General queries N33.7bn cash transfer amid rising poverty

The Auditor-General for the Federation has queried the transfer of N33.75 billion to over 3.29 million households under the National Cash Transfer Office (NCTO) in 2023, citing concerns that it could not be verified whether the funds reached genuine beneficiaries. The query is contained in the 2024 Annual Report on Non-Compliance and Internal Control Weaknesses in Ministries, Departments and Agencies, which was transmitted to the National Assembly on July 17, 2026. The report noted that electronic transfers were made to beneficiaries listed on the National Social Register across 35 states, but the NCTO failed to provide sufficient records to establish the authenticity of the payments. This development raises fresh concerns over the federal government's planned $1 billion cash transfer programme.
