The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a resolution promoting equal-area world maps, including the Equal Earth projection, to correct distortions in the representation of Africa. The resolution was passed with 164 votes in favor, one against (the United States), and six abstentions. The initiative, sponsored mainly by African Union member states, encourages governments and institutions to use more accurate maps. This move aims to address long-standing cartographic biases that downplay the size of equatorial regions.
