Lagos State pensioners, under the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), have accused the police of tear-gassing them during a peaceful protest at the Lagos State Secretariat on August 31, 2026. The protest followed the expiration of a 19-day ultimatum issued to the state government on August 1, which the union said was ignored. After the ultimatum expired on August 19, the union staged a warning protest across all 57 local government areas on August 24, which also received no response. The pensioners arrived at the Secretariat in about 20 buses and 10 private cars, intending to proceed to the Governor's Office, when the alleged incident occurred.
