Former Nigerian Olympian Yusuf Alli has stated that the upcoming EKO 2026 National Intermediate Games will expose states that rely on recruiting established athletes rather than developing grassroots talent. The games, scheduled for October 1-15 in Lagos, will feature athletes aged 15 to 18 competing in 28 sports. Organizers expect over 14,000 participants from Nigeria's 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. Alli emphasized that the competition aims to strengthen the pathway between youth and senior sports, shifting focus from short-term medal success to sustainable development.
