Today, September 8, 2026, marks International Literacy Day (ILD), with this year's theme 'Literacy for people, the planet and prosperity.' The World Bank rates Nigeria's adult literacy rate at 70.41 per cent, leaving an illiteracy rate of 29.59 per cent. However, the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, said in May that the North-West and North-East regions have the lowest literacy and numeracy rates despite receiving 80 per cent of education donor funding over the past decade. The day offers an opportunity to reflect on progress and shape future literacy agendas.
