The COMESA Monetary Institute, in collaboration with the International Monetary Fund and the UK Office for National Statistics, conducted a training on Big Data for Macroeconomic Statistics from August 31 to September 4, 2026, in Nairobi, Kenya. Officials from ten COMESA member central banks, including those of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Egypt, Eswatini, Kenya, Mauritius, Rwanda, Sudan, Uganda, and Zambia, attended the session. Dr. Lucas Njoroge, Director of the CMI, highlighted the growing importance of big data in supporting evidence-based policymaking, noting that digital advancements have increased the availability of high-frequency and non-traditional data sources such as financial transactions, mobile money records, geospatial information, and other digital datasets, which can enhance macroeconomic statistics.
