Real Madrid, under coach Jose Mourinho, began their Champions League campaign with a 2-1 victory over Inter Milan at the Santiago Bernabeu. Goals from Kylian Mbappe and Fede Valverde, both resulting from Inter errors, gave Madrid a two-goal lead in the first half. Carlos Augusto pulled one back for Inter in the second half, but they could not find an equalizer. Mourinho, who led Inter to Champions League glory in 2010 at the same stadium, returned to Madrid for a second stint as coach.
