The recent flash floods in Nepal, which killed over a thousand people and caused widespread destruction, have prompted Nigerian agencies to warn of a potential repeat of the 2012 flooding that claimed 363 lives and displaced about three million people. The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET), Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), and National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) have urged citizens to remain vigilant, as such disasters can occur with little notice. The government is being called upon to invest heavily in flood prevention measures to mitigate future risks.
