The Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, has called for life imprisonment or the death penalty for individuals involved in the production and distribution of fake regulated products, describing counterfeiters as 'merchants of death'. She made the call while responding to concerns over the circulation of suspected fake and substandard products in Nigeria. Adeyeye disclosed that NAFDAC mopped up 7,210 products during nationwide post-marketing surveillance operations between May and July 2026. The agency also arrested persons allegedly involved in counterfeiting CWay water, Oral-B, and Colgate toothpaste, and has secured convictions of 64 counterfeiters with sentences of up to seven years in prison.
