Kenya is preparing for potential health risks linked to the anticipated 2026/2027 El Niño season, which is forecast to bring above-average rainfall to parts of eastern Africa from October to December. Strong El Niño conditions, combined with a positive Indian Ocean Dipole, are expected to cause wetter-than-normal conditions in several countries, including Kenya. The forecast follows widespread flooding during the March-May 2026 long rains, which affected 27 counties, claimed 122 lives, and damaged infrastructure, increasing the risk of waterborne diseases.
