Nigeria faces a potential loss of over $1 billion in annual agro-export earnings due to the European Union's new deforestation regulation. The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) will take effect on December 30, 2026, for large and medium-sized operators, with micro and small operators having until June 30, 2027. The regulation covers commodities such as cocoa, coffee, palm oil, rubber, soybeans, wood, and cattle, requiring them to be legally produced, traceable, and not linked to deforestation after December 31, 2020. With about 300,000 mostly smallholder cocoa farmers, Nigeria must act urgently to comply and protect its exports.
