A new study by Dr. Abdul-Wasi Moshood of Lagos State University warns that Nigeria cannot afford to be complacent about the threat of military coups. The study, titled 'Closing the Barracks Gate? Notes on Preventing Military Coups in Nigeria,' argues that the political, economic, and institutional conditions that triggered coups in other African countries are still present in Nigeria. It emphasizes that preventing coups requires making democracy deliver, strengthening institutions, reducing elite impunity, addressing colonial legacies, and professionally reorganizing the military.
