SON, UNFPA Seek Safer Cheaper Pads As 37m Nigerian Women Battle Period Poverty

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) are advocating for stronger regulation and policy reforms to make menstrual products safer and more affordable, as period poverty affects millions of Nigerian women and girls. At the Nigeria Menstrual Health Product Forum 2026 in Lagos, SON Director-General Dr. Ifeanyi Okeke emphasized collaboration among regulators, government agencies, manufacturers, and development partners to deliver quality products at affordable prices. UNFPA Gender/GBV Management specialist Dr. Zubaida Abubakar noted that rising costs, poor WASH facilities, and limited access to quality products are driving period poverty.
