Mercy Ships has begun providing free surgeries in Ghana after a 19-year absence. The first surgeries were performed on board the Global Mercy, the world's largest purpose-built civilian hospital ship, which will remain in the Port of Tema until June 2027. The charity's return marks a new chapter in its relationship with Ghana, which began in 1991. During the 10-month field service, the ship will provide specialized surgical care and support the education and mentoring of Ghanaian healthcare professionals. Despite Ghana's efforts to strengthen surgical care through its National Surgical, Obstetric, and Anaesthesia Plan, barriers such as cost, geographic access, and limited specialist services continue to prevent timely surgical care for some patients.
