A Category 3 Instrument Landing System (ILS) acquired by the federal government for N7.58 billion and installed at Abuja and Lagos airports in 2019 has been abandoned, according to a THISDAY inquiry. The amount, equivalent to N30.02 billion in 2026, covered only the first phase of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) project, with plans for a second phase and installation at other airports including Kano, Katsina, Maiduguri and Sokoto. Industry sources said the abandoned project exemplifies government waste of tax revenue. After installation, NAMA could not provide other requirements for the equipment to function, leading to its abandonment.
