Yobe State has recorded 511 cases of diphtheria and 13 deaths from January to 8 September, according to the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Muhammad Gana. In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Damaturu on Thursday, Gana said the 13 deaths represented a case fatality rate of 2.5 per cent, lower than in most other affected states. The outbreak affected 12 local government areas, and vaccination plans are underway. The current total is significantly lower than the 1,100 cases reported in September 2025 and the 3,080 cases in 2023, which the commissioner attributed to sustained outbreak response activities.
