The Federal Government has initiated the process to decriminalise attempted suicide. The Federal Executive Council approved the position of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare on the matter. The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Iziaq Salako, announced this in Abuja during the 2026 World Suicide Prevention Day commemoration. The proposal will now be sent to the National Assembly for legislative action. Salako described the reform as both a legal and public health measure, emphasising that individuals in mental health crisis need support rather than punishment.
