Amnesty International has condemned the Zambian authorities’ cancellation of passports belonging to several critics, including former Zambian Ambassador to Ethiopia Emmanuel Mwamba, historian Dr Sishuwa Sishuwa, former opposition MPs Binwell Mpundu and Emmanuel Jay Banda, former State House Special Assistant Kaizer Zulu, and blogger Lillian Mutambo. Vongai Chikwanda, Amnesty International’s Deputy Regional Director for East and Southern Africa, said the arbitrary cancellation violates international human rights law, specifically Article 12 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. She noted that the move is part of a wider post-election crackdown on dissent. The statement was issued on 11 September.
