The Akwa Ibom State government has banned online betting, pool, and other gambling activities, citing operators' failure to regularise their operations. The chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Internal Revenue Service, Mr. Okon Okon, explained that the ban was necessary after operators refused to comply with licensing requirements. Unemployed youths in the state, including graduates, have threatened to protest, describing the ban as insensitive given the prevailing economic hardship. The youths argued that gambling activities have been a regular pastime for them amid limited job opportunities.
