A national budget is more than just numbers on a page; it is a moral agreement between a government and its people, showing whose lives matter and what a government truly cares about. Looking closely at how Nigeria funds healthcare, it is clear that this agreement is broken. The government announces big financial allocations for health, but a look at the actual cash released shows a sad reality: the healthcare system is being set up to fail. The public conversation about health funding in Nigeria is based on a deceptive illusion, as the 2.48 trillion Naira allocated to health in the 2026 budget represents only 4.2 per cent of the total national budget. This allocation falls far short of the 2001 Abuja Declaration target, which requires African nations to dedicate at least 15 per cent of their annual budgets to healthcare.
