The recent controversy surrounding the 2026 Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results has once again exposed fundamental questions about Nigeria's examination system. Following concerns raised by the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) over the 2026 WASSCE results, stakeholders met with the Minister of Education, Dr Olatunji Alausa. Among the outcomes was an encouragement to public and private schools to embrace NECO examinations more widely as a credible alternative examination pathway. This decision deserves commendation, but the call for greater patronage and strengthening of NECO isn't new; Nigeria should have given NECO greater institutional attention for a long time.
