Diphtheria has killed two patients in Abuja out of five laboratory-confirmed cases, according to the FCT Administration. Dr Adedolapo Fasawe, Mandate Secretary for Health Services and Environmental Secretariat, said 15 suspected cases were investigated as of last week, with five confirmed and several patients treated and discharged. She explained that diphtheria is a severe bacterial infection affecting the nose, throat and occasionally the skin, with early symptoms including fever, cough and catarrh. Fasawe cited a tragic incident in which a barber's 'surgery' made a child bleed to death.
