Two years after the amended Cybercrimes Act 2015 was enacted, individuals, including journalists, have been arrested and detained under its provisions. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed amendments in February 2024, including revisions to Section 24, which criminalises certain online comments. Stakeholders have called for the repeal of some provisions, especially Section 24, describing it as contentious. Despite the amendment, several individuals have been controversially arrested, detained, or prosecuted under the Act.
