A fire and stampede at a school in Bukavu, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, has killed at least 26 children, according to UNICEF. The blaze began around 9:00 am on Thursday while children were in lessons at Ujamaa primary school, prompting some pupils to jump from upper floors to escape. A teacher reported hearing students screaming and seeing a huge fire engulfing the wooden-plank school building. The incident sparked a stampede as children struggled to flee, and smoke was seen rising from the site as locals picked through the wreckage.
