IGP not opposed to citizens recording police officers – Media aide

The Nigeria Police Force has clarified that Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu is not opposed to citizens recording police officers while they carry out their duties in public. Force New Media Officer Aliyu Giwa said the IGP's concern is with the misuse of such recordings, particularly when police encounters are turned into social media content. Giwa made the clarification in a series of posts on X on Saturday following criticism of the IGP's recent comments on Nigerians filming police officers. He said the police were not seeking to prevent legitimate scrutiny or deny citizens their rights, and urged Nigerians to distinguish between accountability and misuse.
