Nick Lyktey, a 34-year-old who grew up in Wantagh on Long Island, moved to Fort Wright, Kentucky, for a one-year work requirement and stayed for seven years. He now works as chief of lab operations at Gravity Diagnostics. He said the state's relative affordability has helped him build a better financial future for his family, and retiring at 55 is now on the table.
