Alhaji Bamanga Tukur (CON) was born on 15 September 1935 in what is now Adamawa State. He came to national attention in the mid-1970s as General Manager of the Nigerian Ports Authority and later became Governor of the old Gongola State from October to December 1983. In 1992, he was an unsuccessful presidential candidate on the platform of the defunct National Republican Convention, and he served as Minister of Industries during the 1990s. He was National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from March 2012 to January 2014.
