The Nigeria Police Force has clarified that Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu is not opposed to citizens recording police officers while they perform their duties in public. The Force New Media Officer, Aliyu Giwa, said Disu's concern is with the misuse of such recordings, particularly when encounters between police officers and members of the public are deliberately turned into social media content. Giwa made the clarification in a series of posts on X on Saturday, following criticism of the IGP's recent remarks on Nigerians filming police officers. He said the police are not seeking to prevent legitimate scrutiny or deny citizens their rights, stressing that responsible recordings could promote accountability and also protect officers against false allegations.
