The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released its final list of candidates for the 2027 National Assembly elections, showing that women make up only about nine percent of the 1,303 candidates contesting the 109 senatorial seats. The list, signed by INEC Secretary Rose Oriaran-Anthony, includes candidates from 22 political parties across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. Of the total, 1,180 are male while 123 are female. Four states—Jigawa, Nasarawa, Niger and Yobe—returned no female candidate at all, while Akwa Ibom recorded the highest number of women with ten, followed by Rivers, Kwara and Osun with seven each.
