The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has attributed the increasing incidents of flooding and erosion in parts of Nigeria to unregulated sand dredging activities. NIWA warned that indiscriminate dredging could weaken river banks, alter waterways, and heighten community vulnerability to flooding and erosion. The warning was given by NIWA Area Manager Farooq Imam during a sensitisation exercise for sand dredgers and residents of Tamburawa communities in Kano State. NIWA expressed concern over non-compliance with safety and environmental regulations by some operators.
