School resumption: Parents lament as fees go up 40%

As primary and secondary schools reopen across Nigeria, parents and guardians are facing higher school fees, with many private schools increasing charges by between 30 and 40 per cent. In Lagos State, parents with children in public schools who are not formally employed and cannot provide tax clearance certificates are now required to pay N20,100 in levies, up from N10,100. A private secondary school in Ipaja increased its tuition from N86,000 to N124,000 per term, while another in Egbeda raised its fee from N250,000 to N320,000 per term. School owners have also cited unpaid bills and high running costs, while the Nigeria Union of Teachers urged parents not to be discouraged.
