The proliferation of substandard and counterfeit drugs, foods, and other consumables in Nigeria has reached alarming levels, posing serious health risks to millions. The situation calls for urgent action from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), which is perceived to have lost its regulatory urgency. NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, attributed the crisis to longstanding regulatory weaknesses, while its Director of Investigation and Enforcement, Martins Iluyomade, revealed that some Chinese nationals involved in counterfeiting now operate manufacturing and distribution networks within Nigeria. These revelations highlight fundamental issues that need to be addressed.
