Kannywood Receives Boost As National Theatre Seeks Greater Skills Access

The National Theatre of Nigeria has inaugurated its Creative Summit in Kano, the first time the initiative has been held outside Lagos. The two-day programme brings together practitioners from the creative economy to discuss access to funding, financial literacy, and practical skills development. Kano was selected as the inaugural city due to its prominent role in Nigeria's creative landscape as the home of Kannywood and its rich performing arts heritage. At the opening ceremony, Mrs Tola Akerele, general manager and CEO of the National Theatre, emphasised that the choice of Kano was intentional to broaden access to essential tools and opportunities beyond urban centres.
