Health experts have called for a fundamental change in Nigeria's approach to tackling Lassa fever, urging a shift from seasonal awareness campaigns to continuous prevention efforts. Despite a one per cent fatality rate, Nigeria continues to face recurring outbreaks with mortality from the disease moving from 15 to 20 per cent. The NCDC Director-General, Dr Jide Idris, noted that cases usually increase during the dry season, particularly between November and April. Experts stressed the need for sustained measures to address the public health challenge.
